Steelers place Fernando Velasco on injured reserve

The revolving door that is the Pittsburgh Steelers’ offensive line continues to swirl with little resistance and has no signs of stopping anytime this season, as another Steelers’ offensive lineman is lost for the year.  The Steelers have placed center, Fernando Velasco, on the injured reserve list with an Achilles tendon injury, officially ending his 2013 season, reports Mike Wilkening of NBCSports.

Brought in to replace Maurkice Pouncey, who suffered anterior cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligament injuries in the first game of the season, Velasco injured his Achilles late in the fourth quarter of Pittsburgh's Thursday night loss to Baltimore.

Cody Wallace replaced Velasco to finish out the game.  Velasco has been a solid replacement for Pouncey.  A Steelers team that is inconstant and underperforming will miss his toughness, line intelligence and stability.  Since signing with the club in September, Velasco started 11 games for Pittsburgh.

Also injured Thursday night, offensive lineman Kelvin Beachum, leaving the Steelers to juggle their offensive line chess pieces once again.

With the offensive line in a state of flux, the Steelers signed OL Eric Olsen and offensive tackle Rashad Butler.

Olsen was a reserve OL for the New Orleans Saints in 2012 and Butler as a reserve played in nine games this year for the Cleveland Browns.

In other related roster moves, the team sent cornerback, DeMarcus Van Dyke, his pink slip, releasing him over the weekend.
