Astros Notes: Houston signs Jesse Crain to a one-year contract

The winter facelift of the 111-loss Houston Astros continued on Tuesday, as the club announced the signing of free agent reliever Jesse Crain to a one-year contract.
The 32-year old reliever joins the Astros after an All-Star 2013 campaign for the Chicago White Sox, where he posted a career best 0.74 ERA in 38 games pitched with 11.3 K/9 and 2.7 BB/9. The University of Houston alum had his season prematurely cut to an end after right shoulder issues surfaced shortly before a mid-season trade to the Tampa Bay Rays.

Offseason surgery has Crain on the mend, and although the former Twin is expected to challenge for the closer role in 2014, he is no sure bet to be ready to take the mound.
Crain was amongst the top relievers in the Majors over his three year reign in the Windy City, posting career lows in ERA each of the past three seasons and a career high in strikeouts in 2011.

"Jesse Crain is a proven, quality reliever that will help us win games in 2014," General Manager Jeff Luhnow said. "We targeted him early in the offseason and are excited to bring him on board."
