49ers’ Patrick Willis has thumb surgery

By on 1/28/2014 11:00:00 AM

San Francisco 49ers All-Pro linebacker, Patrick Willis, had surgery to repair his injured left thumb, reports Josh Alper of NBCSports.  The busted digit kept Willis from playing in this year's Pro-Bowl.

Willis took to Instagram to post pictures of the cast on his left hand, which is the result of recent thumb surgery.  It is unclear when Willis injured his thumb.  Willis was not on the 49ers’ NFC Championship game injury report.

Willis did injure his right hand in the preseason, breaking a bone, but missed no significant time.  It is unclear if Willis will miss any offseason workouts because of the surgery.

Willis is no stranger to hand issues, he has broken his right hand at least four times throughout his career.  However, injury to his left hand is a new issue.  Broken hands do not seem to bother Willis.  He is still the dominant player he has always been, busted hands or not.

Maybe he just plays meaner with busted mitts.
