Jazz shooting guard Gordon Hayward out versus Cavaliers

By on 1/10/2014 08:00:00 PM

The Utah Jazz upset the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday night by the score of 112-101. The win was their eighth in their last 14 games after a 4-19 start.  Despite the better team play, the Jazz are still 15 1/2 games behind the Portland Trail Blazers in the Northwest Division. Shooting guard Gordon Hayward has been leading the charge of late, scoring 37 points on 13-of-16 shooting against the Thunder.  But the Thunder will have to try to win tonight against the Cavaliers without Hayward.

David Locke, radio voice of Utah Jazz, confirmed the news on Hayward with his tweet.

Expect backup shooting guard Brandon Rush, along with point guards Alec Burks and Diante Garrett, to get extra playing time in Hayward's absence.  Rush is averaging only 1.7 points on 31 percent shooting this season.  Burks is averaging 12.1 points per game and may be the biggest beneficiary in Hayward's absence.  Garrett is averaging 3.1 points on just 39.8 percent shooting from the floor.

Hayward is in his fourth season out of Butler.  He has improved his scoring output from 5.4 points per game as a rookie to 17.1 points per game this year.  Hayward is also averaging 36.1 minutes, 5.4 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game.  Over the last three games, Hayward is shooting 60.4 percent and averaging 27 points per game.
