Rangers Notes: Texas signs Rafael Perez to minor league contract

By on 1/19/2014 03:14:00 PM

Looking to bolster their relief corps, the Texas Rangers agreed to terms with left-hander Rafael Perez on minor league contract with an invitation to spring training, as first reported by Chris Cotillo.
Once a crucial cog to the Cleveland bullpen, the 31-year old underwent shoulder surgery in 2012 and was unable to garner anything more than a minor league contract for 2013, despite a proven big
league track record. Returning to pitch sparingly for the Triple-A affiliations of the Minnesota Twins and Boston Red Sox upon his recovery, Perez posted a 2.60 ERA in 34 2/3 minor league innings with 8.3 K/9 and 2.1 BB/9.

The Dominican burst onto the scene as an integral piece to the 2007 Cleveland Indians, ascending to the left-handed set-up role by registering a 1.78 ERA in 60 2/3 innings pitched, while holding left-handed hitters to a .145 opposing batting average.
