Brad Penny has secured a minor-league contract with the Kansas City Royals, and will report to spring training in hopes of earning a role on the team's 2014 pitching staff.

MLB Daily Dish's Chris Cotillo broke the story.

The right-hander, who will turn 36 in May, last appeared in the Majors with the San Francisco Giants in 2012, throwing 28 innings of work in 22 games (mostly as a reliever).

For his career, Penny owns a 119-100 record, a 4.26 ERA and 1,260 strikeouts spread across 1,899 IP.

Over the course of his 13-year career, Penny has seen time with the Miami Marlins, Los Angeles Dodgers, Boston Red Sox, Giants, St. Louis Cardinals and the Detroit Tigers.

After appearing in 2012 with San Francisco, Penny took 2013 off and was said to have been in good shape earlier this offseason.
It was enough to warrant this deal with the Royals, and it will be interesting to see if he's able to make the team as a starting option in 2014.

  1. I can't see this comeback working. Maybe he'll make the 25-man roster but I doubt it.
