Twins notes: Johan Santana not ready until mid-season but team is interested, Miguel Sano's elbow 'seems ok'

The rumors of Johan Santana making a return to the Minnesota Twins have been circulating for some time. On Sunday, Twins GM Terry Ryan confirmed that the team was indeed interested - but the right-hander won't be able to pitch until the summer. Ryan's comments come courtesy of Mike Berardino, Twins beat writer for the St Paul Pioneer Press, reporting from preseason fan event TwinsFest, where Ryan was participating in a Q&A session.

Ryan also called Santana's possible return to Minnesota "a good fit for both of us". With a possible return obviously still months away after not having pitched in 2013 at all, it's unclear whether Santana will even be able to return to the majors following his second major shoulder surgery in the last four years. At this stage, the Twins ought to be able to sign him to a relatively low-cost, short-term deal with incentives if they do go ahead with a move.

Ryan also addressed the health issues of elite prospect Miguel Sano, who has been struggling with elbow issues, leading to fears that he may have to undergo Tommy John surgery. Berardino quoted Ryan as saying Sano was 'fine' and his elbow 'seems ok', although the GM did state that his activity hadn't been stepped up yet. The young third baseman has outstanding power but if his elbow concerns continue when he returns to playing full speed, it may prevent him from being able to make effective throws from the hot corner.
