Bills’ E.J. Manuel on the run in Buffalo

By on 2/21/2014 11:00:00 AM

How times have changed.  Let me take you back to last preseason for your Buffalo Bills when quarterback Kevin Kolb was slipping on mats and rookie QB E.J. Manuel, who was plucked No. 16 overall in April's NFL draft, was coined "the face of the franchise" by Bills General Manager Doug Whaley.

Fast forward through another losing season for the boys from Orchard Park and multiple knee surgeries for Manuel and we land at the 2014 NFL Scouting Combine where Bills head coach Doug Marrone gave a vote of no confidence for Manuel.

Marrone told reporters that the Bills "can go in any direction" at the QB position.  Marrone also stressed the need for Manuel to stay healthy and on the field.

The Bills have much invested in EJM (they hope Manuel can be a better pocket passer)  and have gathered a group of bison that includes quarterbacks coach Todd Downing, senior offensive assistant Jim Hostler and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackettto to assist Manuel at all cost.

However, if you follow and cover the Bills as I do, you know that Marrone is a straight shooter and what you see is what you get.  If Marrone says that the Bills can go in any direction at QB, whether it is Manuel, a crafty veteran, another rookie or a more capable backup (sorry Jeff Tuel), he means it.

Marrone could have said the Bills direction is Manuel, he did not, and that should have Manuel on the run and on notice that he might no longer be the face the Bills want to look at.
