Angels sign Yorvit Torrealba to minor-league deal

The Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim have signed 35-year old catcher Yorvit Torrealba to a minor league deal with a Spring Training invitation, according to L.A. Times Angels writer Mike DiGiovanna.

Torrealba spent the 2013 season with the Colorado Rockies, serving as the backup to starter Wilin Rosario. In 196 plate appearances spread across 61 games for Walt Weiss' Rockies, Torrealba slashed .240/.295/.285.

At this stage in his career, Torrealba's signing is essentially a move for roster depth; the Angels will head into 2014 with former Rockie Chris Iannetta and Hank Conger expected to split duties behind the plate. Should either of them suffer a significant injury, Torrealba could find his way onto the big-league roster, but for now the deal seems to be more of an organizational move than one designed to help Mike Scioscia's everyday lineup.

Torrealba is the latest seasoned veteran to be inked to a minor-league deal by the Halos; Carlos Pena and Brennan Boesch were signed to similar deals earlier this week.
