Houston Astros top pitching prospect Mark Appel had an emergency appendectomy on January 30, and he was expected to need two to three weeks to recover. Less than one week later, he has started exercising, tweets Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle.

Appel is the Astros' #1 draft pick in the 2012 amateur draft. He was 3-1 with a 3.79 ERA in eight Minor League starts combining Low-A and Class-A last year. At age 22, he is expected to pitch in Class-A for the year, which would be his first professional season. He projects to make his major League debut before too long, possibly later this year if he progresses as expected.

Once ready, Appel will train with the Astros in Kissimmee, Florida. Pitchers and catchers report on Saturday, February 15, and Appel should join then by the 22nd if not sooner. Astros exhibition games begin on February 28.
