The re-signing of left-handed pitcher Bruce Chen today has caused the Kansas City Royals to designate utility man Emilio Bonifacio for assignment. Chen would have placed the Royals over the 40-man roster limit and Bonifacio was the victim of the signing.

Kansas City avoided arbitration with Bonifacio weeks ago to a one-year, $3.5 million, but contracts via arbitration are not fully guaranteed. According to D.J. Short of NBCSports.com, the Royals have reached their spending capabilities this offseason with this signing.

In 2013 with the Blue Jays and Royals Bonifacio hit for a slash of .243/.295/.331 in over 450 plate appearances. His 28 stolen bases will find him a home immediately due to the endless need for speed on the base paths. Because he was designated for assignment he can be traded, released or out-righted in the next 10 days.
