Mariners Notes: Franklin Gutierrez to miss the 2014 season

A once promising career now torpedoed by injury, took another turn for the worse on Thursday as outfielder Franklin Gutierrez informed the Seattle Mariners he would not participate in 2014. The 30-year old has experienced a relapse of the gastrointestinal/autoimmune issues that conspired with a hamstring strain to limit the Gold Glover to just 41 games played last season.

Opting to focus on his recovery, Gutierrez will officially head to the restricted list after signing a one-year, $1mm contract, plus incentives to remain in Seattle this winter. The former Cleveland Indian has only appeared  in 173 games over the past three seasons due to a myriad of physical ailments which have kept him off the field for copious amounts of time. In 2013, Gutierrez managed to club 10 home runs in just 151 plate appearances, while posting a .248/.273/.503 slash line.

Expected to compete as right-handed platoon option in center field this spring, Gutierrez's exodus opens the door for Dustin Ackley and Michael Saunders to claim the everyday duties at the cornerstone position.
