Rays Notes: Tampa Bay close to deal with Erik Bedard

Looking for additional pitching depth, the Tampa Bay Rays are reportedly close to adding veteran Erik Bedard on a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

As first reported by Rays beat writer Marc Topkin of the Tampa Bay Times, Bedard would presumably compete for a big league job this spring with veteran Mark Lowe among others, for a place on the big league roster. Operating as a swingman for the Houston Astros last season, the southpaw struggled to a 4.59 ERA in 32 games pitched (26 starts), with 8.2 K/9 and 4.5 BB/9.

Soon to be 35-year old, the Canadian finished fifth in the Cy Young race for the Baltimore Orioles in 2007 Jeremy Hellickson to elbow surgery while leading the American League with 10.9 K/9. The Rays are speculated to be in the hunt for pitching reinforcements after recently losing starter
