Rumors: 'Mutual interest' exists between Pirates and Kendrys Morales

By on 2/09/2014 03:00:00 PM

After suffering a gruesome leg injury while celebrating a walk off grand slam, first baseman/designated hitter Kendrys Morales has enjoyed two solid seasons. Now a free agent, the 30-year-old Morales has drawn minimal interest on the market.

Nick Cafardo of the Boston Globe reports that there is "mutual interest" between the Pittsburgh Pirates and Morales. Cafardo adds that the Pirates would "love" to add Morales at the right price, but "they may also pursue a first baseman via trade."

Morales, like other free agents, have had their markets impacted by the fact that they are tied to draft pick compensation. As Rotoworld.com notes, if the Pirates sign A.J. Burnett, they would likely not be able to afford Morales.

Other teams that have expressed differing levels of interest in Morales are the Baltimore Orioles and Kansas City Royals. Last season with the Seattle Mariners, he hit .277 with 23 home runs and 80 RBI's.
