Stephen Weiss Injury: Red Wings Center Nears Return after Sports Hernia Surgery

By on 2/12/2014 07:23:00 AM

The Detroit Red Wings are hoping to get a boost to their lineup after the Olympic break ends, with center Stephen Weiss expected to return on February 26th against the Montreal Canadiens, according to the Detroit News.

Weiss has been out of the lineup since December 10th with a sports hernia injury, undergoing surgery on December 23rd. Weiss did get a practice in with the Red Wings before the break, and felt no pain.

Just being in a team atmosphere again has been nice. It's a great feeling, it's been a tough stretch the last while for me but to be out with the team the last few days has been nice, it kind of perks you up.

Weiss will use the Olympic break to get back into playing shape, as he will skate with his former junior team, the Plymouth Whalers of the OHL. The plan is then for Weiss to play in a few conditioning games with the Red Wings AHL affiliate, the Grand Rapids Griffins, right before NHL action resumes.

Weiss has only played in 26 games this year after signing a five-year, $24.5 million contract with the Red Wings in the offseason, registering only four points on the season so far.

But for a Red Wings club that's been decimated by injuries all season long, seeing Weiss return will be a refreshing site for coach Mike Babcock and Red Wings fans.
