Timberwolves' Nikola Pekovic no longer in walking boot

The Minnesota Timberwolves begin their post All-Star break schedule with a game against the Eastern Conference leading Indiana Pacers. The Timberwolves gathered for practice on Tuesday, but starting center Nikola Pekovic did not participate.  It was a big disappointing, even with the six-day rest that Pekovic isn't ready for work on the court. But he was seen without his protective walking boot, which could be a positive sign.

As reported by Jerry Zgoda at, Pekovic wasn't played in a game since January 27.  He is expected to miss tonight's game against the Pacers, which would be his 10th consecutive game missed.  Although disappointing, head coach Rick Adelman wasn't surprised that Pekovic was absent from practice.

"They're hoping to get him more activity over the next few days and see what happens. Like I said before, he's got to get on court and practicing. It's not only the injury, it's the practicing. It's something we really have to look at."
The Timberwolves will most likely practice Thursday and Friday before traveling to Utah for the game against the Jazz, which kicks off a five-game road trip.  Hopes are the Pekovic will be able to play on the trip. If not, expect Ronnie Turiaf to continue to start in his place. Turiaf is averaging 3.8 points and 5.8 rebounds per game on the season, but five points, 8.2 rebounds and three blocked shots over his last five games.

Pekovic, a 28-year old from Yugoslavia, is in his fourth NBA season.  In 44 games this season, he's averaging 18 points and 9.1 rebounds per game.
