Orioles' Matt Wieters exits game with minor ankle injury

By on 3/11/2014 11:14:00 PM

Conceivably the luxury of playing a meaningless spring training game afforded the Baltimore Orioles to err on the side of caution Tuesday, as starting catcher Matt Wieters was removed in the fifth inning of today's game after rolling his ankle on a play at third base.

The 27-year old immediately iced the ankle to prevent swelling, and could possibly sit out Wednesday as well as Baltimore's following games in Tampa and Ft. Myers to receive extra rest.

"[Head athletic trainer] Richie [Bancells] said during the season he would have continued to play," Showalter said. "Just wanted to get some ice on it make sure it doesn't turn into something worse."

Heading into his sixth season as Baltimore's starting backstop, Wieters
finished 2013 with a .235/.287/.417 batting line with 22 homers and 79 RBI. The former number one draft pick, has claimed two Gold Gloves in his short career and was an American League All-Star in 2011 and 2012.
