Orioles' Nick Markakis will start today despite neck stiffness

By on 3/31/2014 02:00:00 PM

The Baltimore Orioles got some good news on Monday as they prepared to face the Boston Red Sox on Opening Day.  Nick Markakis, who suffered some neck stiffness on Saturday, is feeling better & will start the game.  From Brittany Ghiroli of MLB.com:
"Nick Markakis came through batting practice fine, and he'll suit up in right field for Baltimore's Opening Day contest against Boston, batting leadoff on Monday afternoon."

Markakis started dealing with neck spasms on the team's flight from Florida to Virginia on Saturday.  He sat out an exhibition game against the Norfolk Tides as a precaution.  The Orioles were so worried that manager Buck Showalter even came up with two separate batting lineups in case Markakis could not go.

Now that we know he'll be atop of the order, the Orioles will hope he continues his dominance of opening day.  In his career, Markakis has hit .333 (8 for 24) with a double, a triple, a home run, seven runs batted in & five walks.  The Orioles are facing Boston starting at 3:05pm.  If anything comes up during the game, we'll be sure to update you.
