Phillies' Cole Hamels scheduled to throw bullpen session on Wednesday

The Philadelphia Phillies need strong performances from starters Cliff Lee, Cole Hamels and A.J. Burnett if they are to compete with the Atlanta Braves and Washington Nationals in the National League East.  But Hamels has been behind in Spring Training because he had to shut down this off season because of shoulder tendonitis.  After making progress a few weeks ago, Hamels suffered a recent setback, saying his arm was tired and needed to shut it down. But now Hamels is about set to test his left arm again.

As reported by Corey Seidman of,  Phillies manager Ryne Sandberg said that Hamels will throw a bullpen session on Wednesday, six days after having a throwing session canceled.  Hamels has not pitched this spring and will start the season on the 15-day disabled list and will need a few rehab starts in the minor leagues before ready for his season debut.

This is an important bullpen session for Hamels to see where he's at following a labored bullpen session on Saturday.  The Philllies wont need a fifth starter until after April 14. If Hamels cannot return by then, look for the fifth starter to come out of a group that includes Miguel Alfredo Gonzalez, Jeff Manship and Sean O'Sullivan.

Hamels, the 3-time All-Star, had an off season last year. He was 8-14 with a 3.60 ERA, although he did strike out 202 and allow only 205 hits in 220 innings pitched.  In 245 career games, Hamels is 99-74 with a 3.38 ERA.  He is fifth on the all-time Phillies strikeout list with 1,509 and needs only 77 to pass Chris Short and move into third all-time behind Steve Carlton and Robin Roberts.
