Rays' Matt Moore takes line drive off face

By on 3/23/2014 07:30:00 PM

A few days after the horrific scene with Cincinnati's Aroldis Chapman, we saw another pitcher take a sharp drive off his head.  This time it was Matt Moore of the Tampa Bay Rays.  The Rays were playing the Boston Red Sox this afternoon when it happened.  Gorden Edes of ESPN tweets:

Moore walked off the field with a towel pressed against his face.  He was taken in to the locker room where he received treatment.  He ended up having a cut & swollen lip.  He passed a concussion test, which is excellent news.  He will be sent for X-Rays tomorrow to check on his teeth & gum line to make sure the damage isn't worse.  This is an incredibly lucky end result considering how bad it could have been.

Moore is an important piece in the Tampa Bay rotation, he'll be expected to help lead the team back to the playoffs.  Last season, Moore started the year 8-0, the youngest lefthander since Babe Ruth in 1917 to do so.  This Spring, Moore has pitched 14.1 innings, compiling a 3.77 ERA & striking out fourteen.  His big problem has been walks as he's given fifteen free passes!  Stay tuned to Sports Injury Alert as we'll update you on Moore's condition if & when it changes!
