Bengals sign defensive end Sam Montgomery

The Cincinnati Bengals have agreed to terms with defensive lineman Sam Montgomery, and the 2013 third-round draft pick of the Houston Texans will join his third NFL team.

The Texans used the 95th overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft on Montgomery, but he never appeared in a game and was released in October after a report surfaced surrounding his alleged marijuana use before a road game. The Oakland Raiders added Montgomery to their practice squad in December, but he suffered a knee injury during his first practice with the team and was placed on the injured reserve list.

Houston tried to turn Montgomery into an outside linebacker after he played defensive end in a 4-3 defensive scheme in college at LSU, and he was unable to make the transition. So he is automatically a better fit with the Bengals, who will use him at his natural position, and Montgomery could become a solid contributor if he can put last season's issues behind him.
