Mavericks' Dirk Nowitzki sprains ankle in win over Suns

The Dallas Mavericks defeated the Phoenix Suns on Saturday by the score of 101-98. The win improved the Mavericks' record to 49-32, seventh in the Western Conference. The Mavericks have a playoff spot secured, but there is some concern heading in, as forward Dirk Nowitzki sprained his left ankle during Saturday's win.

cott mecum  via Wikimedia Commons reported that Nowitzki sprained his ankle, but played through it and finished with 23 points on 8-for-15 from the floor.  He added eight rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot.  With Nowitzki at less than 100 percent, don't be surprised if he sits out the final game of the season on Wednesday against the Memphis Grizzlies.

If Nowitzki sits out, expect Brandan Wright to continue to see significant playing time and Jae Crowder getting increased minutes. Wright had 12 points, 11 rebounds and three blocked shots in 32 minutes off the bench on Saturday. Crowder made a cameo appearance and did not score in two minutes of action.

Nowitzki is in his 16th NBA season, all with the Mavericks.  He is averaging 21.6 points and 6.2 rebounds in 79 games this season. In 1,187 career games, he is averaging 22.5 points and 8.1 rebounds per game.
