Pirates' Russell Martin leaves game with injury, DL a possibility

By on 4/26/2014 08:30:00 AM

The Pittsburgh Pirates welcomed catcher Russell Martin back from his suspension yesterday but it was short lived.  Martin played half the game before having to leave the game with an injury in the sixth inning.  The injury was disclosed rather quickly by the Pirates & Tom Singer of tweeted it out:

After the game, manager Clint Hurdle quickly back tracked on the hamstring.  "It may not be correct to say that was the reason," said Hurdle, otherwise deferring the matter to the club's medical personnel.  It makes you wonder just how much more to the story there could be.  If the injury is more serious or the hamstring is worse off than they originally led us to believe, a DL-stint could certainly be a possibility for the backstop.  Tom Singer points out that Tony Sanchez of triple-A Indianapolis would likely be called up to take his place if need be.

The Pirates are spiraling downward right now so this just adds more salt to the wound.  They've dropped four contests in a row and lost seven of their last eight.  Martin was replaced in the game by Chris Stewart.  On the season, Martin is hitting .242 with a double, two home runs & 11 RBI.

Stay tuned to Sports Injury Alert for future updates on Martin's condition.
