Rangers' Shin-Soo Choo (ankle) may avoid DL

By on 4/23/2014 06:30:00 AM

The Texas Rangers announced today that an MRI revealed Shin-Soo Choo does not have a high sprain in his left ankle, reports Jeff Wilson of the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. The Rangers' left fielder and leadoff hitter came out of Monday's game against the Oakland Athletics in the seventh inning after he attempted to reach first base on a close play (video here). Choo will not play Wednesday and after the off-day on Thursday, he will be reevaluated Friday to see if the injury has healed sufficiently to avoid a DL stint. Michael Choice completed Monday's game and played left field on Tuesday for the Rangers.

Choo, 31, was signed as a free agent by the Rangers in December 2013 to a seven-year $130 million contract through 2020. The veteran outfielder's great skill in getting on base (.393 OBP from 2007-2014 including a league-leading 26 HBP in 2013) and his speed make the left-handed batter an ideal leadoff man for Texas. He is off to an excellent start in 2014, slashing .313/.429/.463 in 19 games.
