Red Sox to activate Shane Victorino today

By on 4/24/2014 08:30:00 AM

Boston Red Sox outfielder Shane Victorino will make his season debut Thursday against the New York Yankees. The hamstring injury that landed him on the disabled list to begin 2014 now looks like a thing of the past.

Before activating Victorino, Boston had to make room for him on the big league roster. Pete Abraham of The Boston Globe tweeted who the roster casualty is:
Webster didn't appear in a game with the Red Sox yet, but owns a 3.08 ERA and 1.33 WHIP in 26.1 innings pitched in Triple-A Pawtucket as a starter.

Victorino played three games on his rehab assignment with Pawtucket, collecting just one hit in 11 at-bats. However, his health was the top priority as his workload was increased with each game.

His return to the big league roster gives manager John Farrell more flexibility with the outfield rotation. Daniel Nava's early-season slump has landed him in the minors to figure things out, but Victorino provides Boston a legitimate option to be the team's leadoff hitter.

Before landing on the DL, Victorino hit .250/.323/.357 in 28 at-bats during spring training.
