Astros place Anthony Bass on DL; recall Josh Fields

By on 5/15/2014 09:15:00 AM

The Houston Astros are in the middle of their rebuilding process, and have already found themselves in the basement of the American League West. Their 14-27 record is the worst in the AL, and 11 games behind the first-place Oakland Athletics. Anthony Bass had been reasonably effective in Houston's bullpen, but he's headed for the disabled list.

Bass was playing catch before Tuesday's 8-0 loss to the Texas Rangers, and felt discomfort in his right side while reaching out for the ball. Brian McTaggart of tweeted the roster moves that followed:
Originally projected to be the setup man, Bass has also earned two saves in three chances. He's thrown 18 innings this season, posting a 4.50 ERA and 1.22 WHIP with just four strikeouts. Hopefully, he won't be on the sidelines for too long, but injuries to rib cages and obliques always take longer than most.

The Astros recalled Josh Fields from Triple-A Oklahoma City to take Bass' roster spot. The right-hander also has two saves in three opportunities, while striking out 15 in 12 innings pitched. However, opponents are hitting .340 off him, leading to a 12.00 ERA and 2.08 WHIP.

He only appeared in three games for Oklahoma City, but didn't allow a run through three innings of work.
