Giants Injury Update: Buster Posey out of lineup

By on 5/29/2014 05:22:00 PM

According to Alex Pavlovic of the San Jose Mercury News, Buster Posey of the Giants is out of the lineup Thursday due to a recourring lower back injury. He is available to pinch hit.

The Giants start a 4 game series in St. Louis as they sit in first place in the National League West with a 34-19 record.

This season, Posey has been out of the lineup with a lower back nerve issue, but was back in the lineup the next game. He is hitting for a line of .254/.333/.396 with 7 home runs, 25 runs batted in, 21 walks, 25 strikeouts, and a .729 OPS in 49 games.

In 2013, Posey hit for a slash of .294/.371/.450 with 15 home runs, 72 runs batted in, 60 walks, 70 strikeouts, and a .821 OPS in 148 games. He was coming off of a World Series and the Most Valuable Player Award in the National League.

The Giants hope he can be in the lineup Friday, but they would likely hold him out as long as they need to if he doesn't get better. They want him healthy as they get into the dogs days in summer and as the playoff race intensifies.
