Giants Injury Update: Pablo Sandoval scratched from game

By on 5/08/2014 07:30:00 AM

Pablo Sandoval injured his thumb in the final play on Tuesday night.  Starling Marte kicked his glove when sliding in to third & as a result, Sandoval's thumb was fairly sore.  The Giants continued their series with the Pirates last night in a losing fashion.  Sandoval was scratched from the game to rest the injury.  From Henry Schulman of SF Gate:
"He got his left thumb bent backwards when Starling Marte inadvertently kicked his glove sliding into third on the fateful and final play of Tuesday night’s 2-1 loss.  Sandoval walked into the clubhouse wearing a protective brace on the hand."

He shouldn't miss too much time.  The Giants flew across the country to start a four-game series in Los Angeles tonight.  He could be given another day or two off to rest the thumb but should not need more time than that.  He'll likely have to test it during batting practice as well as take some grounders at third base.  It's definitely something worth keeping an eye on but not something that should be worried about.

Sandoval made an appearance last night, pinch hitting for Tim Lincecum in the fifth inning and slashing a single.  Sandoval was replaced at third base by Joaquin Arias, and he wound up going 1-for-3.  On the season, Sandoval is hitting .174 with four doubles, a triple, two home runs & six RBI.
