Indians Injury Updates: Zach McAllister, Nyjer Morgan

By on 5/23/2014 07:30:00 AM

The Cleveland Indians kicked off a seven-game road trip and a four-game series against Baltimore yesterday with an 8-7 victory.  It was the second straight day in which the Indians won the game in the 13th inning!  The Indians have now won four in a row and are making strides towards getting out of the basement in the AL Central.  They got dealt some bad news on Thursday as two DL moves were made, let's go over both.

Zach McAllister
McAllister has been the definition of awful this season.  He's apparently been dealing with a back issue most of the season, even though manager Tony Francona says he had no idea about the ailment.  David Wilson on reports the DL move:
"the Indians placed their starter [McAllister] on the 15-day disabled list with a low back strain prior to Thursday's game against the Orioles."
McAllister has struggled a lot this season.  He has a 3-4 record after ten starts with a 5.89 ERA & .279 Opposing Average.  He's had two starts where he didn't give up a run, making his ERA in those other eight starts a ridiculous 8.45!  He's only surrendered five home runs this season so it's not the long ball that's hurting him, it's the inability to go more than a couple innings without giving up a half-dozen hits.  Don't expect McAllister to spend too much time on the DL, this is likely just a case of giving him time to rest up & hopefully return with a better mindset.

Nyjer Morgan
Morgan hit the DL just over a week ago.  It appears the knee strain is worse than originally thought as the Indians transferred Morgan to the 60-day DL yesterday.  From Chris Towers of CBS Sports:
"Though he is not expected to require surgery, Indians outfielder Nyjer Morgan found out he will be sidelined for quite a bit longer than expected Thursday.  The Indians transferred Morgan to the 60-day disabled list in order to make room on the 40-man roster Thursday. This move will keep him out until at least mid-July, as a result of a sprained right knee suffered May 15."
It's a little surprising since he just hit the disabled list but the Indians have played quiet on this one.  Just looking for information on his move to the 60-day DL proved hard as not many sources even reported it.  It's an injury that will likely be fully healed by the end of the DL-stint but with the lack of information out there, it makes you wonder what's really going on.
