Rays Injury Update: Ben Zobrist, Jeremy Hellickson

By on 5/23/2014 01:36:00 PM

The Tampa Bay Rays haven’t had it easy to start the season, which isn’t an excuse because there have been a number of injury-bitten teams, but the players that the Rays have lost have been enormous.
The Rays have had to deal with the absence of players such as Ben Zobrist, Jeremy Hellickson, and Alex Cobb, who was brilliant Thursday night giving up only three hits in 6 scoreless innings.  According to Joe Smith of the Tampa Bay Times, Zobrist plans to return next Friday in Boston. Zobrist didn’t have any setbacks with his dislocated left thumb while he was fielding grounders before Thursday’s game. Zobrist predicts that he will get some minor league at-bats before returning to the Rays’ active roster.

The other big name on the disabled list is pitcher Jeremy Hellickson, who is recovering from elbow surgery in January. Hellickson took a major step toward his return Thursday, throwing live batting practice. These are the first hitters he’s faced since last October in the American League Division Series. Hellickson mostly threw fastballs, mixing in a few curveballs and changeups. Hellickson told Joe Smith, "Everything felt good, that's the main thing,". Hellickson said he'll throw another live batting practice Sunday before advancing to a simulated game, with hopes of returning before July.
