Rockies' Wilin Rosario to start rehab today

By on 5/16/2014 10:15:00 AM

Colorado Rockies catcher Wilin Rosario has not had a great start to his 2014 season, losing games in April to a sore left hand/wrist, and hitting the DL on May 3 with a viral infection. In the 24 games he has played, he's put up a line of only .239/.274/.398 with three homers (OPS+ 73). Thomas Harding of reports that Rosario will start his rehab with a game tonight at Triple-A Colorado Spring. He is eligible to return from the DL on Sunday.

After putting up good offensive numbers in 2013 (.292/.315/.486, 21 homers, 79 RBI, OPS+ 105) and playing 121 games, Rosario did not play for the last two weeks of the season, sidelined with a strained left calf; he also had issues with the calf in Spring Training.

Defensively, the young backstop is very poor, ranked by Fangraphs as the worst regular catcher in MLB for 2013. Still that was an "improvement" over 2012 when he was 53rd of 53 catchers with 400 or more plate appearances. Obviously, Rosario is working on this aspect of his game.

Now in his age-25 season, Rosario was signed by the Rockies out of the Dominican Republic in 2006 and made his major league debut on September 6, 2011. His offense garnered him fourth place in the 2012 Rookie of the Year voting. Rosario is pre-arb and under team control through the 2017 season.
