Cubs Injury Update: Emilio Bonifacio MRI shows strained oblique

By on 6/14/2014 09:00:00 PM

Chicago Cubs center fielder Emilio Bonifacio had an MRI performed Friday after leaving Thursday night's game with the Pittsburgh Pirates when he injured his rib cage area while swinging at a pitch. The Cubs had already placed him on the disabled list before the MRI. The results came Saturday and confirmed what the Cubs had predicted: a right oblique strain.

In her Saturday report, Cubs beat writer Carrie Muskat of quoted pitcher Jake Arrieta discussing the loss of the team's lead-off hitter. Said Arrieta,
"Losing Boni is tough, because he can be a catalyst at the top of our lineup. He can do so many things. He can slap the ball around and use his speed to get on base. He's also a good defender that can play anywhere. So that's a tough break for us there."
The Cubs have no exact timetable for Bonifacio's return, but the Cubs' Injury Report says possibly late June. Ryan Sweeney came up from Triple-A on Friday to fill in Bonifacio's roster spot. Bonifacio is hitting .266 with 1 HR, 16 RBI, and 13 SB as the Cubs' primary lead-off hitter.
