Diamondbacks Injury Update: Eric Chavez could land on DL

By on 6/09/2014 10:15:00 AM

Arizona Diamondbacks third baseman Eric Chavez has been fighting injury almost all season, he has had more issues with his left knee this year. Chavez told,"I hurt it the day before we went to Australia. I actually did it when we were playing Cleveland [in Spring Training]." It is evident that Chavez's knee has been aggravating him for quite some time now.

Chavez said he hurt his knee running, and it has been harming him in the field and at the plate. He has dealt with knee problems for a while now, missing 15 games with a left knee strain last August. He has only played in 44 games this season and has made 69 plate appearances.

Through 44 games played he is batting .246/.346/.449 along with three home runs and eight RBI's. It is evident that he has been struggling at the plate. He has never been great in the box, but this year is definitely worse than others. Chavez also struggles in the postseason with a .202 average and 10 RBI's through 27 total postseason games with both the Oakland Athletics and the New York Yankees. He is 36 years old and already past his prime. Chavez commented to on his age affecting his injury, "There's something degenerative going on there because I am old." Chavez may hit the DL soon, hopefully it will not turn into a bigger deal than it already is. Manager Kirk Gibson said that Nick Evans and Didi Gregorius could be possible backups to third baseman Martin Prado if Chavez hits the DL.
