Marlins Injury Update: Jarrod Saltalamacchia, Christian Yelich

Catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia, on the DL since June 1 with a concussion, returns today as the Miami Marlins (36-35) face the New York Mets (32-40). Catcher J.T. Realmuto was sent to Double-A Jacksonville, according to Joe Frisaro and Maria Torres of  The team placed left fielder Christian Yelich on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to June 14 with a lower back strain. Saltalamacchia hit .237/.335/.404 (OPS+ 102) with six homers and 17 RBI in 48 games before the injury.

Saltalamacchia, now in his age-29 season, was the Atlanta Braves first round draft pick in 2003, making his major league debut May 2, 2007. In July 2007 the Braves traded with Beau Jones (minors), Elvis  AndrusNeftali Feliz and Matt Harrison to the Texas Rangers in exchange for for Ron Mahay and Mark Teixeira. The Rangers traded him to the Boston Red Sox in July 2010  for Michael Thomas (minors), Roman  Mendez (minors), Chris McGuiness and cash.

After an excellent year in 2013, helping Boston to the World Series by slashing .273/.338/.466 (OPS+ 118), "Salty" reached free agency and signed a 3-year $21 million contract with the Marlins that takes him through 2016.
