Nationals Injury Update: Gio Gonzalez goes five innings in return from DL

By on 6/19/2014 08:30:00 AM

Gio Gonzalez returned from a month on the DL to throw five shaky innings in the Nationals 6-5 victory over the Houston Astros, reports Mark Zuckerman of Nats Insider. Although his left shoulder seemed fine, Gio needed 93 pitches (61 strikes) in the sweltering heat to get through the fifth, allowing four runs (all earned) on five hits and three walks while striking out six. The Nationals (37-33) meet their Division rivals, the Atlanta Braves (36-35), at Nats Park tonight.

The 28-year-old Gonzalez was an AL All-Star in 2011 when he was with Oakland and an NL All-Star for the Nats in 2012. He was third in the 2012 Cy Young voting with 21 wins and a 2.82 ERA. In 2013 he went 21-8 with a 4.52 ERA.

The Chicago White Sox' first-round draft pick in 2004, Gonazalez was acquired by the Nationals from the Oakland Athletics in December 2011 in exchange for A.J. Cole (minors), Tommy MiloneDerek Norris and Brad Peacock. (The Nationals re-acquired A.J. Cole in 2013 in the Michael Morse trade.) He is signed to a 5 year, $42M contract with the Nationals that takes him through 2016 with 2017 and 2018 options.
