Orioles Injury Update: Matt Wieters to see Dr Andrews next week

By on 6/09/2014 07:45:00 PM

The Baltimore Orioles headed into a series against the Boston Red Sox on Monday with a record of 31-30, five and a half games behind the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League East. They are hanging tough in the division despite having a pitching staff that is 25th in the Major Leagues in ERA. Seven Orioles are currently on the disabled list, one being All-Star catcher Matt Wieters, who is scheduled to meet with Dr. James Andrews. There is no word on when Wieters will return.

Our own Keri Carbaugh reported on June 3 that Wieters had his third throwing session, throwing a total of 30 throws, starting at 70 feet and progressing to over 90 feet. At the time, it seemed as though Wieters could avoid surgery as long as he continued to progress. But that may change following a recent report by Brittany Ghiroli, who covers the Orioles for, as she tweeted the following update on Wieters.
Wieters was selected by the Orioles fifth overall in the 2007 draft.  The two-time All Star and two-time Gold Glove Award winner batted .235 with 22 home runs and 79 RBI last season. In 26 games this season, he is batting .308 with five home runs and 18 RBI. Wieters is a career .257 hitter with 92 home runs and 346 RBI.
