Panthers Injury Update: Amini Silatolu should be ready for training camp

By on 6/26/2014 05:00:00 PM

Last season, injuries forced the Carolina Panthers to turn to a converted defensive lineman at one of their guard spots. Now that guard Amini Silatolu is back healthy, they should not have to worry about that this year.

The team managed to win 12 games last season, despite the injury to Silatolu's knee that forced him out of all but three games in 2013. Now, the 25-year-old says he's almost back to 100%.

“It feels good, probably 98 percent,” he said. “I’ve still got to work on some stuff during this little break.”

Silatolu was as second-round choice in the 2012 draft from Midwestern State, a Division II school. Despite being limited both OTAs and minicamp, Silatolu and rookie Trai Turner are pleasing Panthers' GM Dave Gettleman.

“They’re competing, and there’s a lot of youth there,” Gettleman said. “We like what’s going on.”

One thing Gettleman shouldn't be pleased about? The tackle position. Outside of Ryan Kalil, the retirement of Jordan Gross opened up a hole on the Panthers' offensive line that could pose problems for Cam Newton and co. this season.
