Pirates Injury Update: Gerrit Cole will throw bullpen Friday

By on 6/12/2014 05:15:00 PM

The Pittsburgh Pirates enter tonight's game against the Chicago Cubs with a record of 31-34, tied for third with the Cincinnati Reds in the National League Central. The Pirates are currently in the middle of the pack in runs scored and team ERA. For the Pirates to make a push in the division, they will need good health from pitchers Francisco Liriano and Gerrit Cole. There is some good news regarding Cole, who is making small, but steady progress in his rehab from injury.

I reported on Wednesday that Cole, who was placed on the disabled list with shoulder fatigue retroactive June 4, made 25 throws from 60 feet off flat ground. It appears that Cole is progressing, as  Rob Biertempfel, who covers the Pirates for the Pittsburgh Tribune, tweeted the following update on Cole.
Cole, in his second Major League season, is leading the Pirates in wins with six. In 76 2/3 innings, he's allowed 75 hits and 25 walks, while striking out 69.  In 31 career starts, Cole is 16-10 with a 3.39 ERA and 169 strikeouts in 194 innings
