Pirates Injury Update: Starling Marte, Russell Martin

By on 6/30/2014 11:15:00 AM

The Pittsburgh Pirates got outfielder Starling Marte back last night as they gave reigning National League MVP Andrew McCutchen a night off. Marte has been dealing with a swollen finger but returned to play center field in the Pirates' 5-2 win over the Mets on Sunday. Catcher Russell Martin was also given a second consecutive day off, with the lineup news coming courtesy of the Pittsburgh Tribune's.Travis Sawchik:
Marte went 1-4 with a run scored in his first start since Tuesday, following his pinch-hit appearance Saturday night. The 25-year-old had a concussion scare earlier this week when he slid headfirst into Sean Rodriguez' knee, but it has actually been the middle finger he jammed which has kept him out for most of the past week. McCutchen had played in 80 of Pittsburgh's 81 games prior to Sunday and so this allowed him to get two consecutive days of rest, with the Pirates also having an off day on Monday.

Tom Singer of suggests that Martin's absence was at least partly related to a takeout slide from Friday's game, when he slightly extended his shoulder. Although Martin said he didn't suffer an injury, manager Clint Hurdle told Singer that with the off day coming, "it was a good opportunity to give him another day to recover".
