Reds Injury Update: Joey Votto likely to go on rehab assignment

By on 6/04/2014 09:00:00 AM

Tuesday, Joey Votto of the Reds went through batting practice, fielding and running drills to be cleared and able to go on his rehab assignment. There isn’t a date scheduled, but Votto felt good about it Tuesday. The decision will not be made for a couple days.

"I feel good, a lot better than a few weeks ago," Votto said before undergoing those drills to Trent Rosecrans of USA Today. "I'm looking forward to getting out there and being part of the routine, it's been a while since I've been able to do the things that are asked of us on an everyday basis. I'm excited."

"It's one of these injuries that take a little bit of time," Votto said of the strained quadriceps to Rosecrans. "Strength can't happen in a short period of time, it takes a little bit of time to get in there and then integrating the baseball stuff, which is something I haven't done as much. I 'll give it a few days of that and then hopefully play a couple of games or not and then come back and be part of the team again."

Votto says he feels strong and unlike the feeling he had in 2012 where he returned from a knee injury that resulted in him hitting for low power numbers.

This season, Votto is hitting for a line of .257/.410/.449 with 6 home runs, 12 RBI, 33 walks, 31 strikeouts, and a .859 OPS in 39 games. He has a WAR (Wins Above Replacement) of 1.4, which is considered above average right now projecting to have a WAR of over 4.0.

In 2013, Votto hit for a slash of .305/.435/.491 with 24 home runs, 73 RBI, 135 walks, 138 strikeouts, and a .926 OPS in 162 games. He was healthy last year, but the Reds lost in the Wild Card game to the Pirates after winning 90 games.
