Tigers Injury Update: Torii Hunter hopes for Saturday return

By on 6/21/2014 07:30:00 AM

The Detroit Tigers defeated the Cleveland Indians on Friday by the score of 6-4. The win improved the Tigers to 38-32 on the season and are hanging tough in the division and the American League, despite having three players on the 60-day disabled list and two others on the 15-day disabled list. Outfielder Torii Hunter is not on the disabled list, but hasn't played since Monday due to a hamstring injury. He's hoping to return to the lineup today.

Our own Rose Ingberman reported on June 17 that Hunter came out of the previous night's loss to the Kansas City Royals with a "knotted" hamstring.

Updates on Hunter, as reported by Chris Cwik of, Hunter took swings and ran on Thursday, was not in the lineup and would need some time to recover. Again he was out of the lineup on Friday, but was expected to return to action on Saturday.

J.D. Martinez has started in the absence of Hunter.  On Thursday, Martinez went 1-for-3 with a home run. On Friday, he continued his hot hitting, going 3-for-4 with a home run and three RBI.

Hunter, in his 18th Major League season, is batting .266 with nine home runs and 35 RBI. He's had 10 seasons with at least 20 home runs and is a career .278 hitter with 323 home runs and 1,262 RBI.
