49ers Injury Update: LaMichael James suffers dislocated elbow

By on 7/29/2014 09:30:00 PM

San Francisco 49ers running back LaMichael James was taken off the practice field on Sunday due to a dislocated elbow.

The injury occurred while engaging linebacker Michael Wilhoite during a blitz pickup drill. The time frame on how long James might be sidelined could be around a month, reports NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

A month will more than likely mean missing the entire preseason for this third-year player from Oregon, with the hopes of being ready for the start of the regular season. LaMichael James looked to be a strong candidate for making the cut this year before his injury, seeming to be all but a lock on special teams as a return man.

While all injuries are bad, James should consider himself lucky that if this truly is a basic dislocation, then there should be no requirement for surgery. However, this injury could not have come at a worse time for James.

With Kendall Hunter expecting to miss the rest of the season due to a torn ACL that occurred last Friday, this would have been a golden opportunity for Lamichael James to climb the latter in camp for the number-two back behind Frank Gore.

Depending on who steps up during camp and preseason, James should still have a good shot to make the roster because of his return ability. In the course of 10 games last season James only had 59 yards on 12 carries, but was able to show flashes as a punt returner. As far as where he could land on the depth chart will depend on if anyone else can take a step up to fill the void.
