49ers Injury Update: Navarro Bowman officially placed on PUP

By on 7/23/2014 10:00:00 PM

On Wednesday the San Francisco 49ers placed ILB NaVorro Bowan on the physically unable to perform list and comes months after Bowman tore his ACL and MCL in the 2013 NFC Championship game.
According to NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk, “the team announced linebacker NaVorro Bowman was placed on the active/physically unable to perform list” and is not “expected to be back on the field for the start of camp.”

Because of his injuries, the former Penn State product restructured his current contract, giving the 49ers a much needed $3.27 million in cap space.

Per Yahoo! Sports, Bowman “is not expected to return until sometime around the midpoint of the regular season.”

In his past three seasons with the Niners, Bowman has averaged 145.3 tackles, three sacks, 7.3 passes defended and seven tackles for loss. Losing such a physical presence inside will definitely hurt the Niners and their fifth-ranked defense, however with OLB Aldon Smith, ILB Patrick Willis and OLB Ahmad Brooks, the 49ers line backing corps is still loaded as ever.

With Bowman recovering from injury, rookie LBs Chris Borland and Shayne Skov will be competing with sophomore Nick Moody and fourth-year Michael Wilhoite. It seems no decision has been made as to who will be the week one starter, but as training camp gets under way, the picture should start to become a little clearer in San Francisco.
