Angels Injury Update: C.J. Wilson placed on DL with ankle sprain

By on 7/11/2014 03:45:00 AM

Los Angeles Angels starter C.J. Wilson has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a right ankle sprain, according to Jeff Fletcher of the Orange County Register. The sprain has been diagnosed as 'moderate' and the right-hander will miss between two and four weeks:
Fletcher reports that Wilson hurt his ankle during the fourth inning of his Wednesday start when trying to field a comebacker. There was initially no indication that Wilson was badly hurt and he personally denied he had any injury issues, but an MRI revealed the sprain. Fletcher adds that the Angels will not need a fifth starter until June 22nd and they have both Hector Santiago and Matt Shoemaker on the roster to help cover for Wilson.

This will mark the first time that Wilson has missed a start since moving to the rotation in 2010. Over the last four years, he has made at least 33 starts in each season, pitching more than 200 innings every time. He may still get close to those numbers if he only has to miss one start, but if the sprain doesn't heal quickly and his timetable is closer to four weeks, he will dip below that 200 inning plateau for the first time since becoming a starter. Wilson is on his way to his worst ERA as a starter (currently 4.33) and is on pace to give up the most home runs he has surrendered in a season, with 14 already.
