Astros Injury Update: Dexter Fowler, Collin McHugh

By on 7/12/2014 07:30:00 PM

The Houston Astros hope to activate center fielder Dexter Fowler from the 15-day disabled list on Thursday following the All-Star game, reports Brian McTaggart of McTaggart also says starting pitcher Collin McHugh has been placed on the 15-day disabled list with a finger injury, retroactive to July 7.

Fowler was placed on the DL on July 1 with a right intercostal strain in his ribs. The Astros had used Alex Presley as a replacement before he went down with an oblique injury last week and have given star rookie George Springer a couple of starts in center since.

After surprisingly signing with the Astros, Fowler has put together a fine 2014 season at the top of Houston’s order. Fowler owns a wRC+ of 122 and a .377 OBP in 76 games.

McHugh suffered a fingernail avulsion during his start last Sunday and was removed in the fourth inning. He was hopeful to start on Saturday against the Boston Red Sox, but the Astros decided to place him on the DL.

Brett Oberholtzer was recalled in place of McHugh and made the start on Saturday. McHugh is expected to start his first day of eligibility on July 22 against the Oakland Athletics, Houston’s fourth game out of the break.

McHugh has been a great surprise for Houston in 2014, with a 3.28 ERA (3.51 FIP) and over 10 strikeouts per nine innings.
