Astros Injury Update: Mark Appel has had cortisone shot for wrist

By on 7/15/2014 09:45:00 AM

Mark Appel, the number one pick of last year's MLB draft, is learning quickly this season that the MLB is not as easy as the NCAA.  After being the best pitcher in the nation and a strikeout machine last season, Appel has struggled in the minor leagues.
This season Appel has not only struggled to dominate on the field, but as Evan Drellich of the Houston Chronicle reports, Appel has received cortisone shots in his wrist in the past few weeks.

Drellich also reported that according to Appel's agent, Scott Boras, the injury was minor and just a way to deal with tendinitis.
The way Appel has pitched on the field however, one has to wonder if injuries have had any effect on him.  Earlier in the year, he also missed time with an emergency appendectomy.

On the field, Appel has been crushed in 10 starts.  Through his first 36.2 innings, Appel has allowed 39 earned runs and he is just 1-4.  There is hope that by taking care of these injuries that he can return to his form that he showed as a former number one pick.
