Blue Jays Injury Update: Brett Lawrie, Edwin Encarnacion, Adam Lind, Nolan Reimold

By on 7/20/2014 07:00:00 PM

The Toronto Blue Jays fell out of first place at approximately the same time that they had many injuries to key players. Among those players are Brett Lawrie, Edwin Encarnacion, Adam Lind, and Nolan Reimold. All four could begin Minor League rehab assignments at some point late in the coming week. Barry Davis of SportsNet Toronto made the announcement Sunday afternoon.

In addition, Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos stated optimism that he will have all four players back, possibly in early August.'s Jamie Ross quoted Anthopoulos discussing the matter. Said Anthopoulos,
"I'm optimistic that our guys have a chance to come back sooner than we all think. I got an update [Saturday] that Lind and Encarnacion are really progressing well ... they're swinging off the tee. Again, we haven't set a timeline or timetable. Again, just in speaking with our training staff, they wouldn't be surprised if these guys have a chance to get into rehab games by the weekend."

Brett Lawrie

Lawrie went on the disabled list on June 23 with a fractured index finger. He has removed the splint and started taking ground balls. After he regains enough strength to grip a bat well enough, he will begin taking swings. Anthopoulos said a little more about Lawrie:
"He's about ready to start swinging. It's just a matter of swinging to his tolerance and making sure that the stability holds up. He's certainly moving in the right direction."
Lawrie could begin his assignment by next weekend, and the Blue Jays expect him back in early August. He is hitting .244 with 12 HR and 38 RBI in 69 games.

Edwin Encarnacion

Blue Jays fans will remember this image of their slugging first baseman needing help off the field after straining his right quadriceps on July 5.

Anthopoulos said that Encarnacion has started hitting off a tee, but there is no timetable for his return. Still, though, Anthopoulos did state that Encarnacion could also start playing in rehab games very soon. Encarnacion is hitting .270 and was among the MLB leaders in home runs (26) and RBI (70) when he went down.

Adam Lind

First baseman Adam Lind, Encarnacion's replacement, fractured his right foot some time back and went on the disabled list on July 11. He has already taken two rounds of batting practice, and Anthopoulos said Lind shows no symptoms and has no pain. "It's obviously a great sign," Anthopoulos stated. Lind is hitting .320 with 4 HR and 27 RBI in 61 games.

Nolan Reimold

Finally, left fielder Nolan Reimold will also have a chance to return soon from his injury, a left calf strain. He last played on July 11. Reimold has played in four games with the Blue Jays, but he has performed well: 4 for 12 with 3 RBI.
