Blue Jays Injury Update: Edwin Encarnacion suffers setback

By on 7/26/2014 02:50:00 PM

Toronto Blue Jays first baseman Edwin Encarnacion suffered a setback in his rehab from a quad injury Monday, according to Scott MacArthur of TSN:

Encarnacion has been out since July 5 after he suffered a grade 2 right quad strain while running to first base in Toronto’s game against the Oakland Athletics. Manager John Gibbons said he suffered the minor setback while taking swings on Monday, offering no other details.

The 31-year-old was one of the most productive position players in the league before the injury, posting a 162 wRC+ with 26 home runs. Adam Lind is also on the disabled list with a foot injury, leaving Juan Francisco to start at first base for the Blue Jays.

Encarnacion is approaching a month without any game action, meaning he will likely need to play a few minor league games before returning to the majors.

Toronto needs Encarnacion back in the lineup as soon as possible. The Blue Jays currently trail the New York Yankees by one game in the race for the second AL Wild Card.
