Braves Injury Update: Evan Gattis to DL

By on 7/01/2014 06:30:00 AM

The Braves have placed catcher Evan Gattis on the 15-day disabled list with a bulging thoracic disk in his back, the team announced. Gattis will be given an epidural in the next couple days.

Gattis, hitting .290 with 16 home runs and 39 RBI, missed his fourth straight game on Monday night. He said he was told 95 percent of similar bulging disks “kind of resolve themselves” without surgery, according to Charles Odum of Yahoo!

In 2013, Gattis hit for a slash of .243/.291/.480 with 21 home runs, 65 RBI, 21 walks, 81 strikeouts, and a .771 OPS in 105 games.

The Braves will look to Gerald Laird and Christian Betancourt while Gattis is out. Ryan Doumit can play catcher as well, if he is needed.

Gattis was a real candidate for the All Star game in Minnesota, but this likely takes him out of contention. He was also being looked at to be a Home Run Derby candidate.

The Braves sit at 45-38 and first in the National League East division in front of the Nationals, Marlins, Mets and Phillies. Atlanta defeated the Mets Monday 5-3.
