Braves Injury Update: Evan Gattis will start rehab Thursday

By on 7/16/2014 10:45:00 AM

The Atlanta Braves open the second half of the season on Friday against the Philadelphia Phillies in a first place tie with the Washington Nationals in the National League East. An offense which is 28th in the league in runs scored must pick up the pace for the Braves to keep up with the Nationals. One player which should provide a boost to the offense is catcher Evan Gattis, who is recovering from a back injury. He is starting a rehab assignment tonight and should be ready to return by early next week.

I reported on July 10 that Gattis was making progress in recovery from an injured back, but Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez didn't expect Gattis to return immediately following the All-Star break.

An update on Gattis, as reported by Carroll Rogers of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, is that he will begin a rehab assignment Thursday with Triple-A Gwinnett.  Gattis had been taking batting practice with Single-A Rome and is scheduled to be the designated hitter.

Barring no setbacks, Gattis is expected to play three or four games before coming back off the disabled list. He could be in the lineup as early as Monday when the Braves take on the Marlins.

Gattis is batting .290 with 16 home runs and 39 RBI this season. As a rookie last season, Gattis batted .243 with 21 home runs and 65 RBI in 354 at bats.
